Religion rant

Normally I avoid 2 topics of discussion like the plague, religion and politics. Because usually they just end up as flame wars. But I got this today and couldnt resist

Below is my reply to this email...

************************************************

I get emails like this and look at them in shock and horror!! Yes horror!! I am sad to say I am ashamed to be an american everytime I see drivel like this come across my computer screen. After all we are SUPOSED to be a race of educated human beings and not masses of herds of sheep. Or have I seriously made a mistake thinking that inteligence and knowledge would make us smarter?

The email I got:

The pilgrams LEFT England because they wanted the FREEDOM to worship their relgion in the way they wanted to do it. NOT How the church or royal family told them too. Anyone practising any other religions beside the royaly sanctioned Church of England suffered persecution.

OMG People!!! did you skip basic grade school history!! Our kids are taught about the pilgrims at a VERY EARLY AGE.
Then they got here and decided to set down a set of guidlines to ensure that the future generations of this country DID NOT SUFFER like they had to because their beliefs were different! Hence the Constitution and Bill of rights. Our country was built on these ideas!!

Amendment One of the Constuitution:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Thats because you are delusional thinking that we ever were a Christian nation. This is WRONG.. We are a FREE Nation. Free to decide what we want to worship. Yes a large majority of the United states of America is Christian but it is by no MEANS an a OFFICAL religion. Just because we have "In GOD We trust" on our money dosen't mean you HAVE TO BE CHRISTIAN or that it is offical. Almost all other religions have a god also. Some religions more then one even! Gasp!. The word GOD doesnt BELONG to any one religion.

I shudder to think that our forefathers fought and died for an ideal, that many people in this country cant seem to get a true grasp on.   Freedom.
Freedom of CHOICE. And that includes choice of religion. Freedom to CHOSE what you want to be in life, who you wish to marry. The list could go on for days.

Now I know many people are gonna start screaming I'm against God! Or christianity or honestly But you know what again that is one of the things that makes the USA great. I am ALLOWED to have an opinion different then yours. I have nothing against religion in general personally. What I do have a problem with are people who issue such blind and blatently obvious bigoted statements such as the email I am responding to.
I get bothered when I hear my boyfriend refer to the general population of our world as sheeple. I like to think we are better then that. But the sad reality is we are just that. At least we are as long as we allow people to spread such nonsense without consequences.

I will pray for our nation. Oh yea I will. I will pray for our nation to open its eyes and see things for how they really are, for our people to see the mistakes made and in the making that pointing us in directions we will not be happy with later on. And I will pray that the sheep break away from the herd and look around.

And for those who will scream I don't know what I am talking about you can even do your own research heres some of the links I used on this topic:
